Complete Premium Hive Setup, Ready to Build
Starting beekeeping shouldn’t feel like a treasure hunt. Most beginners spend hours sourcing each piece separately — a base from one supplier, boxes from another, a lid from somewhere else — hoping it all fits together. We thought there had to be a better way. The OZ ARMOUR Beehive with Flat Pack Base is the answer: a complete, premium hive setup in one box, flat-packed for easy delivery and built to last for years to come.
Crafted from premium 22mm New Zealand pinewood — noticeably thicker than the 18–20mm timber most budget hives use — this hive includes two full-depth boxes, a sturdy flat-pack base, a pre-assembled ventilated lid, and all the screws you need to put it together. Choose 8-frame or 10-frame at checkout, follow the simple assembly steps, and you’ll have a professional-grade beehive ready for bees in a single weekend.
What’s Included in the Box?
Unlike many “beehives” that sell you just a single box, this kit gives you the complete hive setup:
- 2 × Full-depth boxes — flat-packed for shipping and storage
- Flat-pack base — stable, well-engineered foundation for your hive
- Pre-assembled ventilated lid — already built and ready to use straight from the box
- All assembly screws — no extra hardware trips required
Just add frames, foundation, and bees — we sell all of those separately, too — and you have a complete, working hive.
Why 22mm New Zealand Pine?
Timber quality matters more than most beekeepers realise. Our hive uses 22mm thick New Zealand pine — a step up from the 18–20mm timber used in budget hives. Why does this matter? Thicker timber provides better insulation (keeping bees warmer in winter and cooler in summer), greater structural strength (won’t warp or crack under heavy honey loads), and longer service life (a well-made 22mm hive can last 15–20 years compared to 7–10 for thinner timber). NZ pine is the gold standard for Australian beekeeping equipment because of its excellent grain consistency, natural resistance to warping, and proven longevity in our climate.
Why a Flat-Pack Design?
Flat-pack delivery is genuinely the smarter way to ship a beehive. Pre-assembled hives are bulky, expensive to ship, and easily damaged in transit. Flat-packing means dramatically lower shipping costs, safer arrival, and easier storage if you’re buying multiple hives or stocking up before the season. Assembly is straightforward and satisfying — a couple of hours of simple screwing-together, no specialist tools required, and you end up with a hive that’s genuinely better-fitted than mass-assembled imports.
What Does the Ventilated Lid Do?
The pre-assembled ventilated lid is one of the small details that make a big difference for your bees. Proper ventilation through the top of the hive helps regulate temperature on hot days, reduces moisture buildup that can lead to mould or chilled brood, and supports the bees’ natural temperature management. A well-ventilated hive is a healthier hive — and healthier hives produce more honey, swarm less, and resist disease better.
8 Frame or 10 Frame — Which Should I Choose?
Both options are excellent — the right choice depends on your circumstances. The 10-frame hive is the traditional Australian standard, offering maximum honey storage and brood-rearing capacity. The 8-frame hive is noticeably lighter when full of honey — a major advantage for hobbyists, women beekeepers, older beekeepers, or anyone managing back strain. A full 10-frame Full Depth box can weigh over 30kg; an 8-frame box typically weighs around 25kg full. Same proven design, just a more manageable footprint and weight.
Is It Hard to Assemble?
Not at all — the design is genuinely beginner-friendly. The flat-pack components are precision-cut to fit together cleanly, and all screws are included in the box. Most beekeepers complete assembly in an hour or two with basic hand tools (a screwdriver or cordless drill). If you’re comfortable with basic flat-pack furniture assembly, you can absolutely handle this hive. Detailed instructions are included, and our team is happy to talk you through the process if you call us on 1300 692 766.
Who Is This Hive For?
This complete flat-pack hive suits any beekeeper wanting a high-quality, ready-to-build hive setup at a remarkable value. It’s perfect for first-time beekeepers wanting everything they need in a single purchase, hobbyists adding a second or third hive to their backyard apiary, gift-givers looking for the ultimate beekeeping starter present, and sideliners stocking up before the season — the flat-pack design makes it easy to store extra hives until you need them. For commercial buyers needing bulk quantities, give us a call on 1300 692 766 to discuss volume pricing.
How Does This Compare to Your Commercial Grade Boxes?
Great question. Our Commercial Grade Beehive Boxes are a budget-conscious option — sold individually, may have visible knots, and are designed for serious commercial operators buying boxes in volume. This OZ ARMOUR Flat Pack Beehive is a premium complete hive setup — thicker 22mm timber, premium finish, includes the base and ventilated lid, and is targeted at hobbyists and serious enthusiasts who want everything in one purchase at a great price. Both have their place — commercial buyers stretching their dollar will love the Commercial Grade range; beekeepers wanting the complete premium kit will love this one.
