Tape peels off in the heat, foam entrance plugs get chewed through, and a handful of escapees in the cab is enough to make the trip memorable for the wrong reasons. There is also the bigger risk that nobody talks about until it happens: a sealed hive overheating on a warm day.

Zip it shut before you lift the box and every bee stays where it should until you open it at the other end.

Airflow is the part that actually matters

A colony locked inside a solid box generates heat fast, and on an Australian summer day that heat can kill a hive before you reach the destination. The open mesh keeps air moving through the box the whole way, so the bees stay cooler and noticeably calmer in transit.

After the trip

Give it a shake to clear off any debris, fold it flat, and it takes up almost no room in the shed or ute until the next move. One thing worth knowing: the cover keeps bees in, but it does not hold your boxes together. You will still want a hive strap around the stack before you drive off.
