What a young colony actually wants is a snug, well-built single box it can fill out at its own pace.

That's what this is. One full-depth OZ ARMOUR brood box in 22mm New Zealand pine, assembled, painted white and ready to use, with a lid on top and a wax-dipped mesh bottom board underneath. It comes in 8-frame or 10-frame Langstroth sizes, with or without wax-embedded frames.

Why One Box Is the Right Place to Start

Nucleus colonies, package bees, and splits all begin the same way: a modest population, a queen, and a lot of comb still to draw. Kept in a single box, that population stays dense enough to hold brood temperature through cool spring nights, and bees can cover every frame, the best defence against beetle and wax moth. Once outer frames are drawn and the box is getting crowded, add a super on top, growing the hive as the colony does, not ahead of it.

22mm NZ Pine, 3mm Thicker Than Most Imports

Most imported hives use 19mm timber. Thicker walls buffer the brood nest against hot afternoons and cold nights, and the timber is far less prone to warping through wet winters and dry summers. Kept painted and up off the ground, this box should last 15 to 20 years or more.

Wax-Dipped Mesh Bottom Board: Beetle Control and Varroa Monitoring

Bees chase beetles toward the floor. On a solid board, beetles hide in corners. On this board, they fall through the mesh into a removable tray and can't climb back out, dust it with diatomaceous earth for a trap that works every day of the season. The same mesh supports a natural varroa mite-drop count, coat the tray lightly with petroleum jelly, leave it 24 to 48 hours, then count, no opening the brood nest required. The board is dipped in hot beeswax rather than painted, sealing it against moisture for life with nothing to recoat.
