The Beeswax Pillar Candle Mould Every Maker Ends Up Owning

Beeswax does not want to live in a jar. It burns hot, it tunnels in a container, and most of what makes it special, the hardness, the slow burn, the colour and the faint smell of honey, is wasted behind glass. What beeswax wants to be is a pillar: a solid, freestanding candle that holds its shape and needs nothing but a plate to sit on. For a beekeeper with a bucket of rendered cappings, the pillar is the candle to make.

The round pillar silicone candle mould is a one-piece mould that casts a smooth, straight-sided cylinder. Pour, wait, peel, and the candle comes out with a clean surface and no seam line. It takes beeswax, paraffin and pillar soy blends, and because the mould flexes it releases a candle with no spray or release agent, pour after pour.

Why Silicone Suits a Pillar

Rigid metal and polycarbonate moulds need a release agent, and the candle has to slide out, which means a tapered shape. Silicone is peeled back from the candle instead, so the sides can be perfectly straight and the surface comes out glossy. Overfill at the base is trimmed with a warm knife.

Pouring a Beeswax Pillar

A pillar uses a square braided wick sized to the diameter of the candle, so match the wick to the finished size rather than reusing container wicks. Thread it through the base, seal the hole with mould putty or tape and hold the wick centred at the top. Pour beeswax at around 70 degrees and let it cool slowly at room temperature. Beeswax shrinks as it sets, so keep some wax back and top up the base once a dip forms. Demould only when the candle is fully cold and trim the wick to about 1cm. Beeswax needs no cure time.

What It Makes

A round pillar is the plainest candle shape and the one that sells all year. In undyed beeswax it is the classic golden pillar of markets and church tables. In white or dyed wax it is a dinner candle, a wedding table candle or a base for carving and decorating.

What It Is Not

Container soy will not work in it, because soy made for jars is too soft to stand and will slump. Use beeswax, paraffin or a wax sold as a pillar blend. The mould ships without wick or wax and casts one candle at a time, so a production run means several moulds or a patient afternoon. Keep sharp tools off the silicone, and store it upright with nothing stacked on it. Check the finished candle diameter against your pillar wick chart before buying wicks in bulk.

What waxes can I use in this mould?

It suits beeswax, paraffin and pillar soy blends. Container soy is too soft to stand and will slump.

Do I need a release agent or spray?

No. The mould is flexible silicone and is peeled back from the candle, so no spray or release agent is needed.

Will the candle have a seam line?

No. It is a one-piece mould, so the candle comes out with a clean, smooth surface and no seam line down the side.

What wick should I use for a pillar?

Use a square braided pillar wick sized to the diameter of the finished candle. Do not reuse container wicks.

Does it come with a wick or wax?

No. The mould ships without wick or wax and casts one candle at a time.

What temperature should I pour beeswax at?

Pour at around 70 degrees, slightly above beeswax's melting point, and let it cool slowly at room temperature.

Why does my beeswax pillar have a dip at the base?

Beeswax shrinks as it sets. Keep some wax back and top up the base once a dip forms.

Does a beeswax pillar need curing?

No. Beeswax needs no cure time. Demould once the candle is fully cold and trim the wick to about 1cm.

How do I clean and store the mould?

Wash in warm soapy water, dry fully and store upright with nothing stacked on it. Keep sharp tools away, as a nick can become a tear.

Is the mould reusable?

Yes. It is flexible silicone and releases candle after candle without a release agent.
