Premium Italian F1 Queen Bees Available Year-Round — Plus Nucs and Package Bees in Season at Our Sydney and QLD Locations
Looking to buy live bees online in Australia? You’re in the right place. Beekeeping Gear stocks high-quality Italian F1 queen bees, nucleus colonies (nucs), and package bees for hobby beekeepers, sideliners, and commercial apiarists. All our bees are raised in Australia, healthy, hygienic, and ready to thrive in your apiary — whether you’re starting your very first hive or expanding to your fiftieth.
We sell live bees through both our Sydney showroom in Granville (next to Clyde train station) and our QLD location in Meadowbrook. Our Italian F1 queens are available year-round, while nucs and package bees are seasonal — read on for full details.
Why Choose Italian F1 Queen Bees?
Italian F1 (first-generation) queens are the most popular and trusted bee genetics in Australia for very good reasons:
-
Gentle temperament — calm, non-aggressive bees that are perfect for hobby and backyard beekeepers
-
Strong honey production — Italian bees are prolific foragers and exceptional honey producers
-
Excellent brood patterns — tight, even brood means healthy, productive colonies
-
Hygienic behaviour — naturally clean colonies that resist disease
-
Tan/yellow appearance — beautiful, iconic Italian bee colouring
-
Australian-bred F1 genetics — first-generation queens combine the best traits of carefully selected parent stock
-
Adapt brilliantly to Australian conditions — tested and trusted by Aussie beekeepers for decades
If you’re new to beekeeping, Italian F1 queens are the safest, most reliable choice — and they’re the only breed we sell because we believe in standing behind quality, not variety.
What We Sell
Mated Italian F1 Queen Bees — Available Year-Round
Our mated Italian F1 queens are the foundation of any healthy, productive hive. Unlike many suppliers who only sell queens seasonally, we have queens available all year round — so whether you need to requeen a hive in winter or upgrade your stock in summer, we’ve got you covered.
Each queen is:
-
Mated and laying — ready to start a colony immediately
-
Healthy and inspected before sale
-
Marked on request with the year’s international colour code
-
Available throughout the year at both our Sydney and QLD locations
-
Perfect for requeening tired hives, starting new colonies, populating splits, or upgrading your stock
5-Frame Nucleus Colonies (Nucs) — Seasonal
A nucleus colony (nuc) is the easiest way to start a new hive. Each nuc includes:
-
5 frames of bees, comprising brood at all stages, food stores, and a laying queen
-
A mated Italian F1 queen already accepted by the colony
-
Ready to transfer straight into your beehive with minimal disruption
-
Strong and established — fully populated, with brood already developing
-
Perfect for beginners, those expanding their apiary, or replacing lost colonies
Nucs are the fastest, easiest way to start beekeeping because the colony is already established and producing brood. They’re seasonal — typically available in spring and early summer.
🐝 Package Bees — Seasonal, Budget-Friendly Starter Option
A package of bees is a starter colony in its simplest form — a screened cage containing approximately 1kg of worker bees plus a mated Italian F1 queen in a separate small queen cage. Unlike a nuc, a package doesn’t include drawn comb or brood — you install the bees directly into your prepared hive box, and they begin building from scratch.
What’s included in a package of bees:
-
~1kg of healthy worker bees (around 8,000–10,000 bees)
-
A mated Italian F1 queen in a separate queen cage with attendants
-
Sugar syrup feed to keep them fed during transport
-
Ventilated screened cage for safe transport
How packages differ from nucs:
-
No drawn comb or brood — bees must build comb from scratch on your foundation
-
Slower start than a nuc — takes a few extra weeks to build up
-
More affordable — typically cheaper than a NUC, making them a budget-friendly entry point
-
Bees don’t have established loyalty — they accept any new hive immediately, no orientation issues
-
Cleaner start — no risk of bringing diseased comb or pests from another hive
Why packages are great:
-
Lower cost than a nuc, perfect for budget-conscious new beekeepers
-
Disease-free start — no comb means no risk of inheriting pest or disease problems
-
Flexible installation — you control the genetics, foundation, and setup from day one
-
Educational — watching a colony build from scratch teaches you a lot about bees
-
Great for hobbyists wanting to start their first or second hive affordably
Things to consider:
-
Slower honey in year one — because the bees must build comb before producing surplus honey
-
Needs more attention in the first 4–6 weeks while the colony establishes itself
-
Best for beekeepers who already have hive equipment ready to go (frames with foundation, brood box, etc.)
Packages are also seasonal — typically available in spring and early summer when the bees can establish quickly in warm weather.

A water source nearby — bees need water year-round
